Do All-on-4 Implants Have Side Effects?

All-on-4 replaces a full arch of missing or failing teeth with a complete set of replacement teeth anchored on four implants. It's a bigger procedure than placing a single implant, so it comes with a short recovery period. Most of what patients notice afterward is temporary and expected, not a sign that something has gone wrong.

Here's what's normal to feel in the days and weeks after surgery, and what helps you stay comfortable while you heal.

What to expect in the first days after surgery

In the days right after your procedure, it's common to have some soreness around the implant sites, mild bleeding or oozing that settles quickly, tiredness, and temporary numbness or tingling around the mouth and chin. Many patients also notice their speech sounds a little different at first while they adjust to the new teeth. These effects generally ease within the first week as healing progresses.

Bruising and swelling after treatment

Facial swelling and visible bruising are a normal part of healing after All-on-4 surgery. Because the procedure works with the jawbone and gum tissue, some puffiness in the cheeks, lips, and sometimes under the eyes is common, and bruising can show up a day or two after surgery as it moves closer to the surface of the skin.

Swelling usually peaks around the second or third day, then steadily improves over the following week. Bruising often takes a little longer to fully fade, sometimes up to two weeks. A cold compress during the first 24 to 48 hours, switching to gentle warmth after that, keeping your head elevated while you rest, and sticking to soft foods can all help keep you comfortable during this stretch. If swelling or bruising seems to be getting worse rather than better after the first few days, give our office a call so we can check on you.

Other temporary side effects

Some numbness or tingling around the lips and chin can linger a bit longer in certain patients before fully resolving. You'll also want to stay on a soft diet for a while as the surgical sites heal, and it's normal for speech to take some adjustment as you get used to your new teeth. Fever, severe or worsening pain, or bleeding that doesn't let up are not part of normal healing. If you notice any of those, contact our office right away.

Common questions

Recovery, answered

Is swelling and bruising normal after All-on-4 surgery?

Yes. Facial swelling and visible bruising around the cheeks, lips, or jaw are a normal, temporary part of healing after All-on-4 surgery. Swelling typically peaks around the second or third day, and both swelling and bruising generally fade within one to two weeks.

How long does All-on-4 recovery take?

Initial soreness, swelling, and bruising usually settle within the first one to two weeks. For the full healing of the implants themselves, we plan for roughly a year and do not shorten that timeline.

What helps with comfort while healing?

A cold compress during the first day or two, switching to gentle warmth after that, keeping your head elevated while resting, and sticking to a soft diet can all help you stay comfortable. Call our office if swelling or discomfort seems to be getting worse instead of better.
